Words are not enough

Posted : 15 years, 4 months ago on 31 July 2009 09:33 (A review of 3-Iron (2004))

This is such a gentle film and its gentility reflects the relationship of the main characters: one, a young man who can turn his hand to virtually anything and the other, a woman squashed in an unhappy relationship. The young man has a unique way of finding places to stay and on one occasion he meets the woman of the story. The film then builds on their relationship in a, as stated earlier, gentle, but full way.

Now this does not sound like much but the director keeps us in focus with these two even though they do not utter a single word. All dialogue is supplied by external influences. This is what makes the film unique. Though they do not speak their relationship is fuller than if the magic were shattered by words. And what is wonderful is that the director (and the fine acting) gets away with it. One becomes interested in the two main characters and we care about them. Due to no dialogue the film's interpretation also becomes very personal for the viewer. Surely this is the best way of viewing a film. Highly recommended.

"Thanx, jaytoast, for the suggestion of Storm. I am unaware of this film (and I love Swedish films!) so I gotta check it out."

I have been working up a World Cinema list of lists and would like to include yours. Everything is still in the rough stages but let me know. The list is here:

I feel strange listing someone without asking
